All-Day Field Trips (One day per semester)

Sometimes, we have opportunities that take us further from Franklin and need more time for investigation.  Currently, we have 2 full-day field trips scheduled for APES, one per semester.

Our Semester 1 field trip, which usually takes place in mid-October, gives us the opportunity to take 2 tours that relate to wildlife management and water, through visiting the Root River Steelhead Facility in Racine, and the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee.

Our Semester 2 field trip is scheduled in late May, upon completion of AP testing.  Our Wetland Canoe Trip takes us to Lulu and Eagle Springs Lakes, and is a culminating experience that covers all topic areas we have covered throughout the year.

Student attendance for all-day field trips is optional.  Anyone not attending will have an alternate assignment covering material that highlights the main points of what we will learn in the field.

On-Site and Community Field Experiences (during normal class time)

During our 84 minute block schedule, we will oftentimes venture out of the classroom to take part in investigations, activities, and tours, either around the FHS property, or in Franklin and surrounding communities.  On campus, we have resources like the school forest, creek, pond, and parking lot, where we can take part in a multitude of studies and explorations.  Adventures off campus during a block take place by loading a small bus and the school van, and traveling to nearby points of interest that relate to the curriculum being covered.  Most of the experiences we have are planned during the APES block only to avoid issues with students missing other classes.

Hands-On, Real-Life Opportunities

What do we do on these tours? What are the dates?  Do I have to go?  Do I have to do an alternate assignment if I don't go?

(during normal class time)
What kinds of things will be doing?  How will I know when we are going outside or off-site?  What should I wear for

these experiences? Will I         miss other classes?  Is this       optional?

Why we take part in field experiences:
One of the best ways for students to understand more about the environment is to give them hands-on opportunities for exploration and authentic reinforcement for what we learn in the classroom through field experiences.  When planning these, I have done my best to utilize time during our class block to disrupt a minimum of other academic class time.  It is important that for any experiences requiring time beyond our normal block, students obtain all make up work for their other classes. All field trips must have a parent permission slip signed before students are able to participate, and any required fees must be paid in advance.
