Semester 2

APES Canoe Trip

The Semester 2 APES Canoe Trip is always scheduled for the week AFTER AP exams are done.  Because of the large number of students that need to be accommodated, and the limited number of canoes we have available each day, trips are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of that week.  Students can choose which day they would like to attend, and are also able to request who they would like to have in their canoe.  The 3 canoe occupants can be a mix of students from different class periods if students would like to request that option.  The canoe trip is OPTIONAL, since it is all day, and students who attend will miss other classes.  The canoe trip is a culminating experience for the course, and students who choose not to attend will be required to research and report information about the facets of the experience that they were unable to take part in.  There are policies, as well as recommendations and explanations that will be further elaborated on in class.

WETLAND CANOE
EXPERIENCE

Eagle, Wisconsin

The canoe trip is a very unique opportunity, as we have a chance to see 5 very different types of surface water resources that are all located in 1 area.  Eagle Springs Lake is a shallow, weedy impoundment (dammed lake) that has plenty of human impact due to the activity along its shores and islands.  Lulu Lake is a deep, sandy-bottom lake that is surrounded by undeveloped, protected land.  Connecting the 2 is a channel that flows through a marsh, full of cattails and other vegetation, as well as an abundance of animals.  Just a short walk from Lulu is a bog, which is an interesting wetland area vastly different chemically, structurally, and biologically from most freshwater ecosystems.  Finally, we may have time to visit a river that flows into Lulu, a very pristine and picturesque waterway.
